What It Is and Why It Happens

An ankle sprain is a stretch or tear of the ligaments on the outside (most often) or inside of the ankle when the foot rolls. It is the most common sports injury and one of the most under-treated: the pain settles, the swelling goes, and the ankle is never properly rebuilt. The result is chronic ankle instability — repeated rolling, a feeling of giving way and, over years, early arthritis.

Proper rehab restores range, strength, balance and reaction time, and cuts the re-sprain rate dramatically.

Ankle Injuries We Treat

Our physiotherapists at Cityscape Square NE assess and treat:

How We Treat Ankle Sprains

Assessment grades the sprain, checks for fracture using clinical rules (we refer for X-ray when indicated) and tests ligament integrity. Early treatment controls swelling and restores range; mid-stage rehab rebuilds calf and peroneal strength and single-leg balance; late-stage rehab adds hopping, cutting and sport-specific drills with clear return-to-play criteria. Taping or bracing supports the transition. Sports massage and dry needling assist recovery.

Inability to bear weight, bone tenderness or deformity needs X-ray assessment first. See also sports injury physiotherapy and plantar fasciitis.

Our Patients Share Their Journey

After my motor vehicle accident, I was dealing with intense neck pain, lower back discomfort, and stiffness that made even simple movements difficult. Coming to Apollo Physio truly made a huge difference in my recovery journey. I received treatment from Vidhi, my physiotherapist, Janki, my massage therapist, and chiropractic care from Dr. Dhaliwal and I couldn’t have asked for a better team. Vidhi created a well-structured treatment plan and guided me through exercises that gradually improved my strength and mobility. She explained everything clearly and kept track of my progress at every step. Janki’s massage therapy sessions were incredibly helpful in reducing muscle tightness and relieving pain. After each session, I felt more relaxed and could move more freely. Chiropractic sessions with Dr. Dhaliwal were also a key part of my recovery. His adjustments helped improve my alignment and significantly reduced the stiffness and discomfort I was experiencing. He was very professional, knowledgeable, and made sure I was comfortable throughout each session. Within a few weeks, I noticed major improvements less pain, better movement, and a return to my normal daily routine. The combined approach of physiotherapy, massage, and chiropractic care really made the recovery process faster and more effective. The clinic is clean, well organized, and has a very positive and welcoming environment. The front desk staff are friendly and always helpful with booking and insurance related questions. About Ankle Sprain Physiotherapy

Grade I: 1–2 weeks. Grade II: 3–6 weeks. Grade III: 6–12 weeks. Full rehab to prevent re-injury takes a few weeks longer.

Only if you cannot bear weight or have bone tenderness at specific points. We screen for this at the first visit.

Untreated sprains leave weak peroneal muscles and poor balance reflexes. Targeted rehab fixes both.
