Section B Claims Explained for Calgary Drivers
What Alberta’s Section B accident benefits cover, how the 90-day treatment protocol works, and how to get physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage after a crash with nothing to pay upfront.
- Applies regardless of who was at fault
- Physio, chiro and massage all covered
- Claims opened and billed by our team
- Nothing to pay upfront in protocol
What Section B Is and Who It Covers
Section B is the accident benefits portion of every Alberta auto insurance policy. It pays for medical treatment after a collision for the driver, passengers, and any pedestrian or cyclist struck by the vehicle — regardless of who was at fault.
Because it is no-fault, you do not wait for liability to be settled before starting treatment. You claim through your own insurer (or the vehicle’s insurer if you were a passenger, pedestrian or cyclist), and treatment can begin the same week. Section B currently provides up to $50,000 in medical and rehabilitation benefits per person for injuries from the accident.
At Apollo Physiotherapy in Cityscape Square NE we handle Section B claims every day for patients from Skyview Ranch, Redstone, Cornerstone, Savanna, Saddle Ridge and across the north-east. This page explains the process; our car accident physiotherapy page explains the treatment.
The 90-Day Treatment Protocol (DTPR)
Alberta’s Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols Regulation pre-approves a course of care for the most common collision injuries — sprains, strains and whiplash-associated disorders (WAD). If your injury fits the protocol and treatment starts within 90 days of the accident, your clinic bills the insurer directly and you pay nothing. The protocol includes:
- Grade I sprain, strain or WAD I: up to 10 treatments
- Grade II sprain, strain or WAD II: up to 21 treatments
- Treatments shared across physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage
- Assessment within 10 days of the crash preserves the full protocol
- Later assessment is still covered — the count simply starts when you begin
- AB-1 form (your notice of claim) completed at your first visit
- AB-2 form (treatment plan) submitted by your primary practitioner
- No doctor’s referral required
- Concussion, fracture and disc injuries are assessed and billed outside protocol
- Protocol ends at 90 days or when the visit limit is reached, whichever is first
What Happens After 90 Days
When the protocol ends and you still need care, Section B continues — but the billing order changes. Alberta insurance law requires your extended health benefits (Alberta Blue Cross, Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life and others) to be used first. The remaining cost is then submitted to your Section B adjuster, who chooses between direct billing to the clinic or pay-and-submit reimbursement.
If you have no extended health plan, the full amount goes to your auto insurer. If your extended health plan is exhausted mid-treatment, we switch to Section B for the balance. Either way, you should not be paying for collision treatment yourself, and we coordinate it so you are not stuck between two insurers.
Section B is separate from any injury claim you may bring against the at-fault driver (Section A). Using your Section B benefits does not reduce a future settlement, and treatment records from Section B care are routinely used to support those claims.
How to Open a Section B Claim: Step by Step
Most patients have their claim open and first treatment booked within 48 hours. Here is the sequence:
Call your auto insurer (or the vehicle owner’s insurer if you were a passenger, pedestrian or cyclist) and report the accident. You will get a claim number. Do this even for a minor collision — you can decide later whether to pursue treatment.
Call (403) 300-2400 or book online. Bring your policy number, claim number if you have it, the accident date, and your extended health card. No referral needed. Same-day and next-day slots are held for MVA patients.
Your physiotherapist assesses the injury, grades it under the protocol, and completes the AB-1 notice of claim and AB-2 treatment plan with you. We submit both to your insurer.
Physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage start under one plan. Inside protocol you pay nothing at the clinic. We track visits so you always know where you stand against the 10 or 21 visit limit.
If you need care past 90 days, we bill extended health first and submit the balance to your Section B adjuster. Progress reports go to your adjuster and, with consent, your lawyer.
What It Costs You
Inside the 90-day protocol: nothing. Outside protocol: nothing when extended health and Section B are coordinated, which is the normal case. The private fee schedule below applies only if you choose to be treated outside your insurance entirely.

What Section B Covers Beyond Treatment
Section B Claims Explained for Calgary Drivers after a collision is covered under Alberta’s Section B accident benefits, regardless of who was at fault. Inside the 90-day protocol we bill your auto insurer directly — physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage on one claim — and there is nothing to pay upfront. After 90 days, your extended health plan is billed first and the balance goes to your adjuster. Our team completes the AB-1 and AB-2 forms with you and sends progress reports to your adjuster and, with your consent, your lawyer. Full details on our Section B guide.

- AB forms and adjuster reports handled
- Extended health coordinated after 90 days
Deadlines matter: notify your insurer as soon as reasonably possible, and be aware that a Section A injury claim against the other driver must generally be started within two years of the accident. We are not lawyers — for anything beyond treatment, speak to your adjuster or a personal injury lawyer.

Coming to Apollo Physio truly made a huge difference in my recovery journey. I received treatment from Vidhi, my physiotherapist, Janki, my massage therapist, and chiropractic care from Dr. Dhaliwal and I couldn’t have asked for a better team. Vidhi created a well-structured treatment plan and guided me through exercises that gradually improved my strength and mobility. She explained everything clearly and kept track of my progress at every step. Janki’s massage therapy sessions were incredibly helpful in reducing muscle tightness and relieving pain.
