What It Is and Why It Happens
Sciatica is not a diagnosis; it is a symptom. It means the sciatic nerve, which runs from the low back through the buttock and down the back of the leg, is being irritated somewhere along its path. The result is pain, burning, numbness or tingling that travels below the knee, often on one side, and is usually worse with sitting, bending or coughing.
The cause is what matters for treatment. In our NE Calgary clinic the most common are a lumbar disc bulge pressing on the nerve root, a stiff or inflamed facet joint, a tight piriformis muscle in the buttock, or spinal stenosis in older adults. Our assessment identifies which one you have, because the treatment for each is different.
Symptoms We Assess
Our physiotherapists at Cityscape Square NE assess and treat:
- Pain radiating from the low back or buttock down one leg
- Burning, electric or shooting pain below the knee
- Numbness or tingling in the calf, foot or toes
- Weakness in the leg or foot (foot drop)
- Pain worse with sitting, driving or bending forward
- Pain easing when walking or lying down
- Symptoms after lifting, a fall or a car accident
How We Treat Sciatica
Your physiotherapist starts with a movement and neurological exam — reflexes, sensation, strength and nerve tension tests — to locate the irritation. Treatment then targets that source: directional exercises and manual therapy for a disc bulge, spinal manipulation or mobilization for a stiff joint, dry needling and deep tissue massage for a tight piriformis, and a graded walking and strengthening program for stenosis. Nerve gliding exercises and posture changes for driving and desk work are part of every plan.
Most sciatica settles within 6–12 weeks with the right plan. Severe or progressive weakness, numbness in the saddle area or changes in bladder or bowel control are red flags that need same-day medical attention — we screen for these at the first visit. See also back pain physiotherapy.

Our Patients Share Their Journey
After my motor vehicle accident, I was dealing with intense neck pain, lower back discomfort, and stiffness that made even simple movements difficult. Coming to Apollo Physio truly made a huge difference in my recovery journey. I received treatment from Vidhi, my physiotherapist, Janki, my massage therapist, and chiropractic care from Dr. Dhaliwal and I couldn’t have asked for a better team. Vidhi created a well-structured treatment plan and guided me through exercises that gradually improved my strength and mobility. She explained everything clearly and kept track of my progress at every step. Janki’s massage therapy sessions were incredibly helpful in reducing muscle tightness and relieving pain. After each session, I felt more relaxed and could move more freely. Chiropractic sessions with Dr. Dhaliwal were also a key part of my recovery. His adjustments helped improve my alignment and significantly reduced the stiffness and discomfort I was experiencing. He was very professional, knowledgeable, and made sure I was comfortable throughout each session. Within a few weeks, I noticed major improvements less pain, better movement, and a return to my normal daily routine. The combined approach of physiotherapy, massage, and chiropractic care really made the recovery process faster and more effective. The clinic is clean, well organized, and has a very positive and welcoming environment. The front desk staff are friendly and always helpful with booking and insurance related questions. I’m truly grateful to the entire team at Apollo Physio, especially Vidhi, Janki, and Dr. Dhaliwal, for their care and support. About Sciatica Treatment
Most cases improve substantially in 6–12 weeks with targeted physiotherapy. Disc-related sciatica can take longer; muscle-related sciatica often settles faster.
It depends on the cause. At Apollo the assessment decides, and both work from the same treatment plan.
Keep moving within comfort. Bed rest beyond a day or two slows recovery. Walking is usually a good early activity.
