What It Is and Why It Happens
Many headaches are driven by the neck. Cervicogenic headaches start at the base of the skull and spread over one side of the head, often with neck stiffness; tension-type headaches feel like a band around the head and go with jaw and shoulder tension; and even true migraines are frequently triggered or worsened by neck dysfunction. Post-concussion and post-whiplash headaches are a fourth group we see often in the north-east.
Physiotherapy does not treat every headache, but for neck-driven and tension headaches it is a treatment with strong research support, and for migraine it can reduce frequency and the neck component.
Headache Types We Treat
Our physiotherapists at Cityscape Square NE assess and treat:
- Cervicogenic (neck-related) headaches
- Tension-type headaches
- Migraine with a neck or tension component
- Headaches after whiplash or a car accident
- Post-concussion headaches
- Headaches from desk work, screens and posture
- TMJ-related headaches and facial pain
- Occipital neuralgia
How We Treat Headaches
Assessment identifies the headache type and the contributing factors — upper cervical joint stiffness, deep neck flexor weakness, suboccipital and trapezius trigger points, jaw tension, posture and workstation setup. Treatment combines upper cervical mobilization or manipulation, dry needling and acupuncture for trigger points, deep tissue massage for the neck and shoulders, targeted strengthening and posture retraining. For TMJ-related headaches the jaw is treated too.
Sudden severe headache, headache with fever, weakness, confusion or visual loss needs emergency care, not physiotherapy. Post-crash headaches are treated under Section B with our whiplash and concussion programs.

Our Patients Share Their Journey
After my motor vehicle accident, I was dealing with intense neck pain, lower back discomfort, and stiffness that made even simple movements difficult. Coming to Apollo Physio truly made a huge difference in my recovery journey. I received treatment from Vidhi, my physiotherapist, Janki, my massage therapist, and chiropractic care from Dr. Dhaliwal and I couldn’t have asked for a better team. Vidhi created a well-structured treatment plan and guided me through exercises that gradually improved my strength and mobility. She explained everything clearly and kept track of my progress at every step. Janki’s massage therapy sessions were incredibly helpful in reducing muscle tightness and relieving pain. After each session, I felt more relaxed and could move more freely. Chiropractic sessions with Dr. Dhaliwal were also a key part of my recovery. His adjustments helped improve my alignment and significantly reduced the stiffness and discomfort I was experiencing. He was very professional, knowledgeable, and made sure I was comfortable throughout each session. Within a few weeks, I noticed major improvements less pain, better movement, and a return to my normal daily routine. The combined approach of physiotherapy, massage, and chiropractic care really made the recovery process faster and more effective. The clinic is clean, well organized, and has a very positive and welcoming environment. The front desk staff are friendly and always helpful with booking and insurance related questions. I’m truly grateful to the entire team at Apollo Physio, especially Vidhi, Janki, and Dr. Dhaliwal, for their care and support. I highly recommend them to anyone recovering from a motor vehicle accident or dealing with pain they genuinely care and deliver excellent results.

Ramesh has been incredibly helpful in reducing my back and neck pain. He always takes the time to educate me on ways to prevent further injury, which I really appreciate. The front desk staff are equally friendly and professional, making each visit seamless and enjoyable. I highly recommend this clinic to anyone in need of physiotherapy. The team here genuinely cares about your well-being and goes above and beyond to help you recover!
I started visiting Ramesh Bimagani after a motor vehicle accident that caused pain in my shoulders and lower back. From the very first session, he was extremely professional, kind, and attentive. He took the time to understand my condition and explain everything clearly, which helped me feel confident and supported throughout the recovery process. Ramesh created a personalized treatment plan that focused on relieving my pain and improving mobility. His hands-on techniques and guided exercises made a huge difference — I could feel the improvement after just a few sessions. He’s patient, encouraging, and truly dedicated to helping his clients heal. Thanks to Ramesh, my shoulder and back pain have improved significantly, and I feel much stronger and more active again. Frequently Asked Questions
About Headache & Migraine Treatment
Pain starting at the base of the skull, one-sided, with neck stiffness, and reproduced when the neck is pressed or moved, is typical. Our assessment confirms it.
It can reduce frequency and severity when neck dysfunction is a trigger, and it treats the neck pain that comes with migraine. It is not a replacement for medical migraine management.
Neck-driven headaches often improve within 4–6 sessions; long-standing headaches may need a longer program with a home exercise component.
