What Lymphatic Drainage Massage Is and Who It Helps
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a light-pressure massage that moves lymph fluid through the body’s lymphatic vessels. Unlike deep tissue work, the strokes are slow, stretching and almost featherlight, following the direction of lymph flow toward the lymph nodes.
It is used after surgery (including cosmetic and orthopedic procedures) to reduce swelling and bruising, for lymphedema management after node removal, for fluid retention during pregnancy, and for people who simply feel puffy, heavy or sluggish. At Apollo our RMTs deliver MLD as part of our massage therapy service for patients across Cityscape, Skyview Ranch, Redstone, Cornerstone, Savanna, Saddle Ridge and Cornerbrook.
Conditions and Situations We Treat with MLD
Lymphatic drainage is appropriate for a wide range of situations. The most common reasons NE Calgary patients book it:
- Post-surgical swelling and bruising (liposuction, tummy tuck, BBL, joint replacement, knee and shoulder surgery)
- Lymphedema after lymph node removal or radiation
- Fluid retention and swollen legs during pregnancy
- Sinus congestion and seasonal allergies
- Chronic fatigue and sluggish recovery from illness
- Sports recovery and reduction of exercise-related swelling
- Fibromyalgia and chronic pain flare-ups
- General detox, immune support and relaxation
What to Expect in Your Session
Your therapist begins with a short health history to confirm MLD is appropriate — it is not used during active infection, acute deep-vein thrombosis, heart failure or certain kidney conditions. You lie comfortably while your therapist works in a set sequence, starting at the neck and trunk to clear the main lymph pathways, then treating the swollen area. Pressure is very light; many people find it deeply relaxing and some fall asleep.
Post-surgical patients usually begin 3–5 days after their procedure with their surgeon’s clearance, and book a series of sessions in the first two to three weeks. Lymphedema patients often combine MLD with compression and exercise guidance from our physiotherapists.

Our Patients Share Their Journey
After my motor vehicle accident, I was dealing with intense neck pain, lower back discomfort, and stiffness that made even simple movements difficult. Coming to Apollo Physio truly made a huge difference in my recovery journey. I received treatment from Vidhi, my physiotherapist, Janki, my massage therapist, and chiropractic care from Dr. Dhaliwal and I couldn’t have asked for a better team. Vidhi created a well-structured treatment plan and guided me through exercises that gradually improved my strength and mobility. She explained everything clearly and kept track of my progress at every step. Janki’s massage therapy sessions were incredibly helpful in reducing muscle tightness and relieving pain. After each session, I felt more relaxed and could move more freely. Chiropractic sessions with Dr. Dhaliwal were also a key part of my recovery. His adjustments helped improve my alignment and significantly reduced the stiffness and discomfort I was experiencing. He was very professional, knowledgeable, and made sure I was comfortable throughout each session. Within a few weeks, I noticed major improvements less pain, better movement, and a return to my normal daily routine. The combined approach of physiotherapy, massage, and chiropractic care really made the recovery process faster and more effective. The clinic is clean, well organized, and has a very positive and welcoming environment. The front desk staff are friendly and always helpful with booking and insurance related questions. I’m truly grateful to the entire team at Apollo Physio, especially Vidhi, Janki, and Dr. Dhaliwal, for their care and support. I highly recommend them to anyone recovering from a motor vehicle accident or dealing with pain they genuinely care and deliver excellent results.

I started visiting Ramesh Bimagani after a motor vehicle accident that caused pain in my shoulders and lower back. From the very first session, he was extremely professional, kind, and attentive. He took the time to understand my condition and explain everything clearly, which helped me feel confident and supported throughout the recovery process. Ramesh created a personalized treatment plan that focused on relieving my pain and improving mobility. His hands-on techniques and guided exercises made a huge difference — I could feel the improvement after just a few sessions. He’s patient, encouraging, and truly dedicated to helping his clients heal. Thanks to Ramesh, my shoulder and back pain have improved significantly, and I feel much stronger and more active again.
