What It Is and Why It Happens
Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome) is pain along the inner edge of the shin bone from repetitive loading of the muscles and bone lining. It typically hits runners who increased mileage, soccer and basketball players early in a season, military and boot-camp trainees, and new exercisers. Pain is diffuse along the lower two-thirds of the inner shin, worse with impact and often present the next morning.
The important distinction is from a tibial stress fracture, which is a focal, sharper pain that needs different management. Our assessment tells them apart.
Shin and Lower Leg Problems We Treat
Our physiotherapists at Cityscape Square NE assess and treat:
- Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome)
- Anterior shin pain from running
- Tibial stress reaction and stress fracture screening
- Chronic exertional compartment syndrome
- Shin pain in soccer, basketball and running
- Shin pain in new exercisers and boot-camp programs
- Calf tightness contributing to shin pain
- Flat feet and over-pronation driving shin load
How We Treat Shin Splints
Assessment screens for stress fracture, then examines calf and foot strength, ankle mobility, running mechanics and training history. Treatment combines load management (a modified, not abandoned, running plan), calf and foot intrinsic strengthening, hip and glute strength to control the leg, manual therapy and dry needling for the calf, footwear review and custom orthotics when over-pronation is driving the load.
Focal, pinpoint shin pain or pain at rest may indicate a stress fracture; we refer for imaging when suspected. See also sports injury physiotherapy and knee pain.

Our Patients Share Their Journey
After my motor vehicle accident, I was dealing with intense neck pain, lower back discomfort, and stiffness that made even simple movements difficult. Coming to Apollo Physio truly made a huge difference in my recovery journey. I received treatment from Vidhi, my physiotherapist, Janki, my massage therapist, and chiropractic care from Dr. Dhaliwal and I couldn’t have asked for a better team. Vidhi created a well-structured treatment plan and guided me through exercises that gradually improved my strength and mobility. She explained everything clearly and kept track of my progress at every step. Janki’s massage therapy sessions were incredibly helpful in reducing muscle tightness and relieving pain. After each session, I felt more relaxed and could move more freely. Chiropractic sessions with Dr. Dhaliwal were also a key part of my recovery. His adjustments helped improve my alignment and significantly reduced the stiffness and discomfort I was experiencing. He was very professional, knowledgeable, and made sure I was comfortable throughout each session. Within a few weeks, I noticed major improvements less pain, better movement, and a return to my normal daily routine. The combined approach of physiotherapy, massage, and chiropractic care really made the recovery process faster and more effective. The clinic is clean, well organized, and has a very positive and welcoming environment. The front desk staff are friendly and always helpful with booking and insurance related questions.
