What It Is and Why It Happens
Diastasis recti is the widening of the gap between the two halves of the rectus abdominis (the six-pack muscle) along the midline, where the connective tissue stretched during pregnancy. Almost everyone has some separation late in pregnancy; for many it narrows in the months after birth, but for a significant number it persists, with a visible dome or bulge when sitting up, a soft midline, low back or pelvic pain, and a feeling that the core simply does not work.
The goal of treatment is not to close the gap to zero — it is to restore tension and function across the midline so the abdominal wall and pelvic floor work as a unit again.
What We Assess and Treat
Our physiotherapists at Cityscape Square NE assess and treat:
- Abdominal separation after pregnancy
- Doming or coning of the abdomen with sitting up or lifting
- Low back and pelvic pain linked to core weakness
- Feeling of core disconnection or weakness
- Diastasis with pelvic floor symptoms (leaking, heaviness)
- Diastasis in men and after significant weight change
- Return to running, lifting and sport after baby
- Pre-surgical conditioning before abdominoplasty
How We Treat Diastasis Recti
Assessment measures the gap and, more importantly, the tension you can generate across it, along with breathing pattern, pelvic floor function and how you move when lifting your baby or getting off the floor. Treatment is a progressive program that connects breath, pelvic floor and deep abdominals, then loads the core in the positions and tasks you actually do, with cues to eliminate doming. We progress you to impact and lifting with clear criteria. Our pelvic floor physiotherapy and postnatal massage services are on the same chart.
Diastasis can be assessed and treated at any point after birth — six weeks, six months or six years. See also incontinence and prolapse, which often coexist.

Our Patients Share Their Journey
After my motor vehicle accident, I was dealing with intense neck pain, lower back discomfort, and stiffness that made even simple movements difficult. Coming to Apollo Physio truly made a huge difference in my recovery journey. I received treatment from Vidhi, my physiotherapist, Janki, my massage therapist, and chiropractic care from Dr. Dhaliwal and I couldn’t have asked for a better team. Vidhi created a well-structured treatment plan and guided me through exercises that gradually improved my strength and mobility. She explained everything clearly and kept track of my progress at every step. Janki’s massage therapy sessions were incredibly helpful in reducing muscle tightness and relieving pain. After each session, I felt more relaxed and could move more freely. Chiropractic sessions with Dr. Dhaliwal were also a key part of my recovery. His adjustments helped improve my alignment and significantly reduced the stiffness and discomfort I was experiencing. He was very professional, knowledgeable, and made sure I was comfortable throughout each session. Within a few weeks, I noticed major improvements less pain, better movement, and a return to my normal daily routine. The combined approach of physiotherapy, massage, and chiropractic care really made the recovery process faster and more effective. The clinic is clean, well organized, and has a very positive and welcoming environment. The front desk staff are friendly and always helpful with booking and insurance related questions.
